We predict that one of the big trends for this summer will be modern folk. Folk culture is a reference to the popular culture of the past and the things made for use in everyday life, so there’s a big emphasis on handmade and crafted in this trend. This summer it’s getting a modern twist though, with bold, bright colours, unusual prints and vintage materials. If you’d like to reference the trend in your own home, then look for key pieces which will emphasise without overwhelming. Here’s what we’ve picked out.
1. Bertie large smoked glass pendant light, Glow Lighting
Handmade to order in Yorkshire, this beautiful glass shade would look striking paired with one or two of the other colours in the range or as a standalone light fitting. It costs £276 and is available from Glow Lighting.
2. Folksy turquoise bee II cushion, Perkins & Morley
Available in two distinct colour ways, the Folksy collection consists of eight cushion designs including this bright pattern of fantasy flowers with a bee. Available with a choice of two filler pads and in two different materials, prices start at £24.99 from Perkins & Morley.
3. Artichoke platter, Bordallo Pinheiro
This hand-crafted and hand-painted earthenware artichoke serving platter is made in Portugal and is – surprisingly – dishwasher and microwave safe. It measures W31.5 by D27 cm and would look equally as lovely on a shelf as a decoration as on the table. Available from Micucci, £36.
4. Grey striped woven throw, Beaumonde
Made from 65% recycled cotton, this throw will double (or even treble!) as a sofa throw, bed blanket or even picnic rug. The neutral colours mean it will fit into every colouscheme and the long, macrame-style fringe adds interest and texture. £79, available from Beaumonde.
5. Barn owl by night limited edition print, Lime Lace
Bring a sense of drama to your walls with this monochrome print of a barn owl by artist and designer Jenny Evans. It’s a limited edition print of an original linocut artwork, created on acid free, archival quality paper. Every print comes with a signed certificate of authenticity and only one hundred have been created. Available in difference sizes and as framed or unframed, prices start at £50 from Lime Lace.
6. Handwoven multi-coloured recycled Chindi folk rug, Homescapes
Hand made in India on a traditional handloom, this rug is available in four sizes. Tightly woven, the fleece threads make a strong and durable rug that is suitable for daily use. No Chindi rug is the same, giving you something unique for your home. Prices start at £5.99 for the smallest size, available from Homescapes.
7. Set of three Folk Doves round cake tins, Rex London
Keep your bakes fresh and add some style to your kitchen with this set of pretty nesting tins in a bold Folk Doves design. This set of three tins will suit everything from a single fruitcake to a stack of muffins, and will also look good when not in use. £24.95, available from Rex London.
8. Handmade ceramic beakers, Hygge Style
Suitable for mulled wine, hot chocolate, coffee or pretty much anything else you fancy, these beakers, £9.99 each, are hand-made exclusively for Hygge Style by Sage ceramics, they are hand-thrown and glazed in the heart of the Sussex countryside by designer Yvonne Kirk.
9. Lada poppy red luxury linen fabric, Olenka Design
This luxury cotton linen is a medium heavyweight fabric suitable for a wide range of soft furnishings such as curtains and cushions. The design is printed using eco-friendly water based pigment inks and was inspired by the 17th century Russian handicraft and painting style Khokhloma. £84/metre, available from Olenka Design.
10. Raffia storage pots in tobacco, Bohemia
These handwoven baskets are made in small batches by women artisans in rural communities on the outskirts of Marrakech. They feature hand-tied tassels and make great planters for houseplants, or for storing small household objects or toiletries. Available in different sizes and with different coloured tassels, prices start at £10 from Bohemia.
