70s decor

You might be too young to remember the 70s, or maybe not – we won’t judge. Well, either way the good news is that the floral, geometric patterns and psychedelic colours that ruled are making a huge comeback.

Having been shunned for several decades, the pandemic, and the possible boredom that it brought with it, saw the interior designer in many people emerging, Elements of the 70s found their way back into homes up and down the country. This added a hint of retro charm to even the most modern of homes.

So, if you are someone who might be caught shouting “Groovy, Baby!” then rejoice and read on. Below, we explore some of the home aesthetics that you may want to consider, although perhaps not shag carpets as they may be a little too much even for the hardened fan of 70s décor.

Macramé – everywhere

Macramé, a popular knot-tying craft from the 70s, is back with a vengeance. The pandemic certainly has a hand in this. It is turning up in hallways, bedrooms and even the most self-respecting bohemian living rooms. Whether it’s plant holders, wall hangings or even curtains enjoy a little home-made in your space.

Rattan furniture

Okay, rattan never really went out of style – as many people with conservatories will tell you. However, for many, it did take a little holiday. Now though, this natural material is making a huge comeback. Think side tables and chairs that can lend a rather rustic feel to any room.

Wallpaper

The wallpaper of the 70s was bold and very much in your face in terms of patterns and colours. It was rather quickly replaced, however, with something much plainer and more delicate. Today’s home designers, in their infinite wisdom, have decided to bring this style right back into fashion. The only plus side is, that thanks to peel and stick wallpaper, it is now easier to install.

Houseplants – everywhere

The 70s saw the idea of bringing the outside in and this means big houseplants. In fact from spider plants to fiddle lead figs, the bigger and greener the better. The good news is that houseplants can help to reduce your stress levels too!

Wood Panelling

Back in a big way, you will be relived to know that wood panelling is now all about the light and bright modern look. This replaces the dark and oppressive panelling of the 70s.

Vinyl records and turntables

These might not be décor. However, this is one thing that music lovers will certainly be able to get behind. Vinyl can really add a touch of retro coolness to your living space, making you feel instantly more cultured.

Shag carpets

Okay, we said we wouldn’t mention shag carpets and they are certainly a love them or hate them item. However, they are also making a comeback. Thankfully they are a lot less fluffy than they were at the height of the 70s which means they are actually possible to clean. Now, won’t lose things in their pile never to be seen again. The other good news is that the colours are a little less dull.

You can add a touch of the 70’s to your home with just a few of these items or go full on 70’s with all of them to create a room that may just transport you back in time.
