Learn about smudging – a relaxing Feng shui ritual to rid your home of negative energy.

These days, spiritual energy practises are something that feels more accessible to the everyday person. Before, they may have felt a little unreachable because they were associated with a crowd of people you might not have felt you related to. These days though, from recharging your crystals to using a Himalayan salt lamp – more holistic, energy-focused and spiritual home practises are something most of us want to at least try.

Saging, or smudging, is a practise you may well have seen done by yoga fans you follow, or by fans of Feng shui. It looks like you simply set herbs on fire and walk around your house which to be honest, is a bit weird. There is, however, much more to it, and lots of potential benefits too…

So, What Is Smudging?

Smudging is where you burn certain plants prepared in a certain way in order to remove bad energy, and invite good energy in. Some people walk around with the bundle and smoke the house after they have unpacked everything from self-storage and settled in. Some people burn the sage in one place that has the most use, others will smudge around something that they feel has bad energy.

The practise comes from various cultures and practises such as: Feng shui, Buddhism and Native American cultures in America and Canada. Most often it is used to bless a new home, but it can also be used if a place is associated with a negative event or energy.

Which Plants Are Used For Smudging?

Most commonly sage is used for smudging, which is why it can also be called saging. This is because it is a strong herb, and it is thought to be a herb that purifies and cleans the air. However, you can use all kinds of herbs such as: mint, sweet grass, lavender, dried orange peels and thyme.

How To Smudge Your Home

Smudging your home is an easy practise to try, but it should be done with care so that you can get the most out of it. You can buy yourself a smudge stick if you don’t want to make one, or follow a tutorial like this one, and build one yourself.

Once you have your smudge stick ready you should have a candle nearby to keep lighting it throughout the process. You’ll also want a bowl underneath (fireproof) to catch any lit embers that fall off it.

Once you have everything ready you can start saging your home in the areas you feel need cleansing. If you don’t know, just try doing it in one room and see how it feels afterwards. Just light the stick and move around the space as you see fit, or follow circumambulation guidance as is traditional.

Once you have finished, you simply place the stick into a bowl of sand to extinguish it safely. If you want to, you can also imagine your home is now filled with positive energy and lightness, but this part isn’t essential!

“In order to carry a positive action we must develop here a positive vision.”

Dalai Lama

Hopefully you will consider giving smudging a go now you know a little bit about it. At the least, your house will smell delicious afterwards and at most, you’ll feel a much better energy in your sacred space.
